iProbono has recently begun a pilot project in Rajasthan, representing child survivors of sexual abuse in Jaipur and Jodhpur. We have established panels in both cities over the last few months and are working closely with our partner organisations on the ground.
On 23 March 2022, during a recent trip to Jaipur, we conducted our first panel meeting for our lawyers. The session was conducted by iProbono’s Program Officers, Karuvaki Mohanty and Yamina Rizvi, and iProbono’s Social Worker Aishwarya Sinha. It highlighted iProbono’s work and model, and our learnings from years of work in other jurisdictions. The attendees discussed their experiences representing survivors of child sexual abuse, as well as the court procedures in Jaipur. The conversation also explored potential areas for change and steps that can be implemented, particularly regarding witness protection and child-friendly court infrastructure.
It was fantastic to meet our panel lawyers in person. It also helped the team to understand the ground realities in Jaipur and the steps that may be taken to bring about positive changes through legal interventions.
We also participated in an orientation programme for social workers organised by our partner organisation, Aasra Foundation. This programme was attended not only by Aasra’s social workers, but by various other stakeholders including the chairperson and members of Child Welfare Committee (CWC), and District Child Protection Officers. Notably, the Chairperson of the CWC discussed the importance of social workers in providing holistic support to children in need of care and protection. Aishwarya discussed the role of Support Persons, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Rules, and shared her experiences and takeaways from her work in Delhi. The session was well-received, and it allowed Aasra’s social workers to talk about the challenges they face in their jobs and how they may improve the nature of support they provide to children.
We look forward to organising and participating in similar sessions in Jodhpur in the near future.
