The Human Cost of Climate Injustice: Standing with Nepal After Devastating Floods
Gavinda Bolonghe
September 2026 | Nepal

We watched with disbelief as devastating floods swept through Nepal, taking lives, destroying homes and leaving families to rebuild from unimaginable loss.

The climate crisis is not a distant or abstract threat. It is already here. Across the world, communities are confronting fires, floods and increasingly extreme weather, with ordinary people losing their homes, livelihoods and lives.

The reality of this disaster highlights a glaring global injustice. Nepal contributes less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Yet its people are on the front line of a crisis they did little to create.

iProbono in Nepal

At iProbono, this crisis hits incredibly close to home. We have worked on the ground in Nepal since 2018. Over the years, we have built deep partnerships with local organisations and grassroots communities. We deeply value their local knowledge, commitment, and immense resilience. This is a country and a community to which we hold longstanding, unbreakable ties.

“Nepal contributes to less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet our communities are increasingly facing devastating floods, landslides, and profound climate injustices. We have watched in horror as these disasters ravage our homes and threaten the lives of our loved ones. We, who have contributed the least to the climate crisis, are being forced to pay the highest price. We deserve immediate action, accountability, and the relief support needed to rebuild our lives.” – Roshani Regmi, Program Officer, Nepal
